What are e-liquids?

Electronic cigarettes – or cigarettes – emit cigarettes, but do not burn tobacco. Instead, the e-electric cigarette is a battery-powered device that works by heating a liquid in a vapor, which is then inhaled into the lungs. Sometimes the use of e-mail cigarettes is called ‘vaping’. A liquid is called e-liquid for use within an e-cigarette but is also famous as e-juice or vape juice. Electronic liquids may contain nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerol or glycerol, other chemicals (including those used to create flavors) and, in some cases, water. E-liquid products may not be properly or accurately labeled or packaged. There is no guarantee that nicotine is not labeled ‘non-nicotine’. It may also happen that you do not know what other chemicals are in the e-liquid.

If you use e-cigarette:

  • keep it where children can’t see it or achieve it
  • when you are not using it, enter it
  • do not use your email cigarettes in front of children.

  • If you are concerned that a child has swallowed a liquid from an e-cigarette, call the Center on immediately.
  • If they are very sick, they have fallen, breathing stops, they are fitted or have an anaphylactic reaction, add a ring to an ambulance.

E-liquids and the law

Adults in Victoria can buy and use e-liquids that do not contain nicotine. In as in the state and other territories of – it is generally illegal to sell, hold or use nicotine electronic liquids. The exception is where a liquid nicotine is prescribed by a medical practitioner who has a therapeutic need for certain patients. In these cases, a liquidation pharmacy can supply liquid nicotine, or a limited supply can be imported through a personal import scheme.
